Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl
Scouts in 1912. She was inspired by her friends from England, Lord and
Lady Bayden-Powell, the founders of Boy Scouts. Julliette Low loved the idea of scouting and wanted to
start it America for
girls. On March
12th, 1912 she started the first Girl Scout Troop in Savannah
Georgia. Today
there are Millions of Girl Scouts all around the world and more than 11,000
Girl Scouts in Monmouth County Alone.
Year-round, Girl Scouts in
kindergarten through high school participate in a variety of innovative and
interactive activities. Girl Scout programs address topics such as astronomy,
health, math, money management, nature, science, sports, theater, community
service and much more!
World Thinking Day was first
created in 1926 at the fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference.
Conference attendees decided that there should be a special day when Girl
Scouts and Girl Guides all around the world think of each other and give thanks
and appreciation to their "sister" Girl Scouts. The delegates chose
February 22 as the date for World Thinking Day because it was the mutual
birthday of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell.
Every year on World Thinking Day,
we ask the Girl Scouts of Manalapan/Englishtown to wear their Scouting vests
(uniforms) to school to demonstrate their allegiance to scouting and to remind
them to think about their sister scouts around the world.
